Machame Route is the most prominent Route to use along Mountain Kilimanjaro because of the beautiful views and habitats it offers to all those that use it. This route is also one of the cheaper routes offering easy access. The Route is also referred to as the Whiskey route hence requiring you to be tough as it is challenging as you hike through steeper trails for longer distances.
The Machame Route takes a period of six days (five nights) or seven days (six nights), on Mountain Kilimanjaro offering a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The Trek starts at the Machame Gate situated along the Southern edge of Mountain Kilimanjaro requiring you to transfer from Arusha or Moshi.
Hiking along Machame Route
The Hike using the Route begins at Kilimanjaro’s lush, fertile, montane rainforest following the lower slopes that receive some rainfall. The Trail is steep and slippery so we advise you move with trekking poles. The Route follows toward the Shira Plateau through trees and low brush in the heather zone ascending up to the Volcanic Plug, lava Tower before descending beneath the South Ice Field.
The Route is 62 km/ 37 miles and goes Eastwards through continual switchbacks and loose gravel until you reach the Crater Rim at Stella point. The Route proceeds relatively flat for an hour to the prominent Uhuru Peak at the top of Mountain Kilimanjaro then the quick descent goes till Mweka Trail.
