Mountain Sabinyo Volcano in Uganda
Mount Sabinyo Volcano is located in Mgahinga National Park and one of the three Mountain Volcanoes in Uganda. Referred to as Sabinyo Volcano, the Volcano is one of the Virunga Mountain Ranges bordering Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. The Mountain Volcano adjoins all the three countries offering scenic views of the Virungas at a distance.
The word Sabinyo means Tooth or Iryinyo in the local dialect hence the oldest Volcano of the range. Mountain Sabinyo Volcano is found in the North east of Lake kivu and West of Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda. It is elevated at 3,669 metres (12,037 ft). The Slopes are known to inhabit the rare species of Mountain Gorillas in Mgahinga National Park.
Hiking Procedure at Mountain Sabinyo Volcano
Hiking Mountain Sabinyo Volcano is quite challenging and needs some being careful especially along the slopes as there are various caters with sharp ridges hence cannot be hiked in Rwanda but rather in Uganda.
In Uganda the hikers follow varying handmade ladders which enable you to get to the top via the steep regions. The hike to the top of the volcano takes you one day for 8 hours 4 hours to the summit and 4 hours back down.
The hiking adventure starts from the Park Office where you are briefed by ranger guide then with walking sticks and porters who help you get to the top of the top of the mountain volcano.
Follow through the vegetation that varies from bamboo zone between 2400 – 2800m and here you can watch Golden Monkeys as well as wildlife like Buffaloes, Elephants and Gorillas. Follow through the trails up the Mountain Volcano to the joint where you view all the three countries at a distance.

- Stocking hat for warmth
- Gardening gloves for protection
- Long-sleeved shirt and trouser
- Lunch and snacks
